First Christmas as grandparents: ornament wording that fits your family

By ReunionGoods · Reviewed

Use the names the grandparents want to be called, then choose the year you want to remember. “Nana & Pops | 2026” gives a maker the two details they need without squeezing a dedication onto the ornament.

Before you order, check which words are already part of the design. If the artwork says “Our First Christmas As,” the custom line might need only “Nana & Pops.” Entering the whole sentence again could duplicate the heading or make the lettering too small.

Choose the grandparent names before the spelling

If they have already chosen Grandma, Grandad, Mimi, Abuela or another name, use it. If they haven't, ask someone who can check without spoiling the gift. A nickname chosen by the gift-giver may never become the name the child uses.

These are sample lines to adapt, not promises that every listing supports the wording:

  • Two grandparents sharing a tree: “Nana & Pops.” Check their preferred names and the order they should appear.
  • One grandparent: “Grandma Jo.” Check whether the fixed heading uses “My” or “Our.”
  • Grandparents who use accents: “Mémé & Pépé.” Check the accents in both the input field and the rendered preview.
  • Grandparents with longer titles: “Grandma Rose & Grandpa Ed.” Check the listing's character limit and the final lettering size.

A shorter nickname can give the text more room, but don't shorten somebody's name without checking. Ask for a different layout if their chosen wording does not fit.

Decide what the year means

For a first-Christmas gift, use the year of that Christmas. If you are replacing an ornament from an earlier year, enter the original year and check that the preview hasn't substituted the current one.

An announcement gift needs different wording from a gift celebrating a child who has arrived. “Grandparents-to-be” and “Our First Christmas As Grandparents” say different things. Confirm both the wording and when the parents want to share the news before giving the ornament in front of other people.

Check the illustration as well as the sentence. A design with two large mittens and one small mitten may be a fixed picture. It does not necessarily offer a choice of how many grandchildren appear. If that count matters to the family, choose artwork that supports it explicitly.

Write a clean personalization line

Follow the listing's requested order and separator. For a field that asks for “Names | Year”, enter:

Nana & Pops | 2026

Keep questions and extra design requests out of that line. Ask the seller whether they can add a baby name, change the heading or use different artwork before paying for a design that may not allow it.

Preserve apostrophes and accents where they belong in a person's name. O’Neil should stay O’Neil. A family surname used as a label does not automatically need a possessive apostrophe: “The Johnson Family” is a clear option. Copy the approved wording from one note so different relatives do not submit different versions.

Review the ornament, then each copy

On the preview, read the fixed heading and custom line together. Check the name order, accents, year and space around the letters. Enlarge the image to inspect details, then look at the full ornament again to judge whether the names feel crowded.

For several households, check each ornament separately. Two grandparents may share a title but need different names or years. A front-and-back image can also show two views of one ornament; confirm the quantity in the order rather than counting objects in a listing photo.

If you need a correction, use the seller's stated revision process before its review deadline. Check that the revised preview contains the change. For the rest of the family gift list, use our household keepsake quantity guide and holiday gathering checklist.
