What to write on a memorial Christmas ornament

By ReunionGoods · Reviewed

Start with the name your family uses for the person, then choose one short line you would want to read each Christmas. You can leave dates off if the name and words say what you want to remember.

For a gift, ask privately whether the recipient would welcome a remembrance ornament. Let them choose whether it goes on the tree, somewhere else or away for now. A surprise public presentation can make that choice harder.

Choose words that sound like your family

A familiar nickname, a shared expression or a few words about what you miss can make the inscription personal. Read the line aloud. If nobody in the family would say it, try your own words before choosing a stock verse.

These are original examples to adapt, not available product options:

  • For someone who made Christmas feel like home: “Still part of our Christmas.”
  • For a familiar voice you miss: “Your laugh belongs here.”
  • For a quiet remembrance: “Christmas with you in mind.”
  • For a parent known by a family name: “Always Mum” or “Always Papa.”

Keep the person's name exactly as the recipient wants it. “Dad,” a first name and a full name can feel different even when they refer to the same person. Check accents and spelling with someone who knows, rather than copying an uncertain social-media caption.

If you want religious wording, check that the recipient shares those words or beliefs. You can also use a line the person said often, but confirm the exact wording and whether the listing allows a custom phrase.

Decide whether dates belong in the design

The year of a Christmas, a birth year and a death year communicate different things. Decide which you intend before entering a number. If you do not know a date, confirm it or choose a design that permits leaving it blank.

Check the fixed artwork as well as the custom fields. A design may already contain a remembrance sentence, while its personalization accepts only a name and optional dates. Adding another sentence to a name field can duplicate the message or crowd the lettering. Ask the seller about a different layout before ordering wording that the listing does not support.

Give a longer message room elsewhere

Write your first version without worrying about its length, then choose the part that belongs on the ornament. A longer story or dedication can go in the accompanying card. Keep a meaningful nickname or phrase intact when shortening the inscription.

A field's character limit does not tell you how large the printed letters will be. Check the preview at full size and enlarge the name, punctuation and dates. Look at the complete ornament again to judge the spacing around the words.

Check the final inscription with one trusted person

Before paying, keep a note of the exact name, phrase and dates, including anything you want left blank. Follow the listing's requested field order and put questions in a separate message.

If the seller offers a preview, check the fixed heading and your words together. Read both sides if both are printed, and make sure a revised preview contains the correction you requested. Follow that seller's review instructions; this guide does not set a printing deadline.

For gifts across several households, use the holiday keepsake quantity guide to keep the recipients separate from the text you want printed.

Something to remember it by.
