Family saying ornament ideas: keep the words your family uses

By ReunionGoods · Reviewed

Start with a sentence someone in your family says without thinking. The call from the kitchen, the name of a Christmas dish or the sign-off in the group chat can give you better ornament wording than a long verse nobody recognizes.

Write down the words before polishing them. Ask the person who says the line to check your version, including a nickname or a word you spell differently at home. You can keep an expression in the language your family uses. Confirm that the chosen listing supports its lettering and accents before ordering.

Find a line people recognize

Look through your own Christmas notes or ask relatives for the sentence they associate with dinner, gift opening or the trip home. Choose something the recipient would enjoy seeing again. A family joke about a mistake may be funny to the storyteller and uncomfortable for the person who made it.

These original suggestions show ways to start. They are writing prompts, not available product options or quotations from customers:

  • “Save me a corner piece.” For the family that negotiates the baking-pan edges.
  • “Call when you get home.” A familiar goodbye, if those are your family's words.
  • “Who's bringing the good plates?” For a shared dinner habit.
  • “One more photo, then pie.” For the group waiting to eat.
  • “The cousins have the remote.” For a recurring Christmas takeover.
  • “Same table, extra chairs.” For a gathering that has grown.

Replace a prompt with your own expression when you have one. “Aunt Jo's corner piece” and “Save me a corner piece” tell different stories. Choose which one belongs on the ornament before adding a name and year.

Decide what the year records

Use the Christmas year if you want a keepsake from one gathering. A phrase used for decades can also stand on its own when the listing permits a blank year. Do not add “Est.” to a date unless you intend it to mark when the family, household or tradition began.

A shared surname is optional in the wording you choose. “Nana's kitchen,” “Reed & Martínez” and “Christmas at Jo's” each name a different connection. Keep names in the order the recipients prefer. Check an apostrophe as part of the wording, rather than adding one automatically to every family name.

Separate these decisions from the fields the seller offers. A listing may accept a saying, a family name and a year, or it may have fixed words with only a name field. A custom name field does not promise a completely editable design.

Shorten the sentence without losing its meaning

Keep the words someone would recognize first. “Save me a corner piece” is easier to read as one line than an explanation about who gets which brownie. Put that story in the gift card if you want to tell it.

Check the whole composition when a preview is offered. The saying, name and year need space around them. Enlarge the image to read the letters and punctuation, then return to the full ornament view to judge the balance. A character limit alone does not establish printed letter size.

Avoid adding a second heading in an editable field. If the artwork already says Christmas, repeating Christmas in the name line may take room from the family words. Ask whether the seller can support the layout you want instead of fitting instructions into the print text.

Keep one checked version for the order

Use the wording sheet below to record the saying, name, year and words already in the artwork separately. Leave a field blank only when the listing allows it. Keep seller questions outside the text to print.

Ask one relative to read the final version from your sheet. Copy that same version into the order and compare any preview against it. If you request a change, check the complete replacement line on the revised preview, including punctuation that was already correct.

For gifts to several households, follow the matching family ornament order guide to keep each version and quantity separate.
